Three Reasons Why Cats Eat Grass

Cats eat grass because it's moist and juicy and tastes good. And it might also be good for them.
Dear Thomasina...
Why do cats eat grass? Mine eats grass and then throws up all over everywhere. Why does she torture herself this way?

Hi Anxious...
Oh, no! I don't think your cat is torturing herself. Cats eat grass because it's moist and juicy, and it tastes so good. We love eating grass!

Throwing up a few minutes later isn't so great. But it's better than the alternative -- an uncomfortable stomach -- and grass doesn't always make us sick.

Why Cats Eat Grass

Here are three reasons why cats eat grass.
1. We eat grass because it tastes really good, especially when it's still wet from the dew or rain.

2. For us, grass is a digestive aid. It helps us pass hairballs and yucky anim... Oh, my human typist just reminded me that I'm not supposed to talk about my outdoor recreational activities. So let's just leave it at hairballs. And if you've ever had one, you know how uncomfortable they are!

3. The juices in grass contain folic acid, which helps with the production of oxygen in a cat's bloodstream. Honestly, I have no idea what that means. My typist added it.

She also added: Cats lack the enzymes to break down plant matter (what the heck does that mean???). Whatever, apparently that's why eating grass sometimes makes us throw up.

Even if your cats never go out, they can still enjoy eating grass. But don't buy those dinky little pots of grass the pet supply stores sell. They'll just tip over when your cats are eating. Buy some wheat grass seeds and put them in a huge pot that won't fall over. Then your cats can munch to their heart's content and even sit in the grass if they want to. Spray some water on it from time to time to make it taste dewy.

We have a big pot of grass in our living room. But cats being what they are, we never touch it. We'd rather eat the grass outside.
